Don’t allow yourself to stay stuck in negative thoughts. When you think something negative about yourself, determine whether or not you would say those things about another person. If no is your answer, you are probably being too hard on yourself. Rather than taking these statements at face value, look at them in a more positive way in order to come up with a solution to address the problem.

Go outside and soak in some sun each day. Studies have shown that a lack of sunlight can make depression worse.

If you take on your personal problems, this will fight your depression. Avoid getting overwhelmed by doing small things. Creating smaller tasks and more concrete goals can make it much easier to address problems. Little by little, the issues evaporate and are no longer such a concern.

Diet, exercise, and adequate sleep all play a part in whether you are depressed or not. When you begin to feel depression setting in, try a quick walk or enjoyable swim. Thinking longer term, stop eating processed and packaged foods, get some daily exercise into your schedule and get enough sleep each night to ward off depression.

Look for support everywhere you can. Sometimes it can be truly helpful to accept assistance from those that have been in your shoes. Their special perspective can be the difference between a successful fight against depression and failure.

Diet can affect depression. Although we readily recognize that poor dietary choices can have a negative affect on our physical well being, it can affect our mental health as well, contributing to, or worsening, depression. To avoid that situation, eat healthy foods with low fat content.

Keeping in mind that it is you who can take control of your thoughts is a great way to deal with depression. Stop saying the word “depression.” Depression is a negative word and you should never use it to describe your negative thoughts. Replace the word with something like “lesser mood” to describe how you’re feeling instead, and you’ll react more positively.
